Glossary

The words Empi uses, in alphabetical order.

Agenda
A calendar connected to Empi (a Google, Microsoft, Apple or CalDAV calendar, plus the built-in Empi Calendar). Each agenda can count toward your load or simply show you as busy. See which agendas count.
Area
A folder in the projects tree in the sidebar: a way to group related projects (for example Work and Personal). See task properties.
Block / reservation
Real time booked on a calendar for one task. A block has a date, a time range and an origin (you, the planner, or Smart reserve). See reserving time.
Capacity
The amount of free time a day actually has for tasks, once meetings, commutes, breaks and reserved windows are subtracted. See how Empi schedules your work.
Change set
The list of edits the planner would make to your calendar if you applied its plan: blocks added, removed, resized and moved, grouped by day. You see it before anything is booked. See Planner.
Deep work
A task that needs your peak concentration. The planner places deep work inside your peak focus hours first. See task properties.
Due date
When a task must be done. The planner treats it as a hard deadline and works backwards from it. See task properties.
Estimate
How long a task takes. Without an estimate the planner has no size to fit and cannot book time for the task. See task properties.
Focus
The property that says whether a task is deep or shallow work. See task properties.
Label
A free-form tag you attach to tasks and notes to filter and group them. See task properties.
Load
How much work is booked against a day's capacity. A day is over capacity when its load exceeds it. See Today.
Off hours
The default time slot for evenings, downtime, rest and weekends. Work is not scheduled there unless you allow it. See working hours and focus hours.
Peak focus hours
The hours you do your best deep work. The planner places deep-focus tasks inside them first and keeps shallow work out. A soft preference: it never delays a task or misses a due date to respect them. See working hours and focus hours.
Pipes / parallel threads
How many tasks the planner tries to keep you working on at once. A soft target: the planner tells you when it needs more threads to hit a deadline. See Planner.
Project
A named container for tasks, optionally inside an area. See task properties.
Rebalance horizon
How many days ahead the planner books task time. Longer horizons plan further into the future. See Planner.
Rest break
A break the planner reserves after a stretch of continuous work. A meeting or a commute already counts as one. See how Empi schedules your work.
Schedulable
A task the planner can book time for: it has no subtasks, it is assigned to you, it is not done, and it has both a due date and an estimate. Anything else is listed under "Not planned yet" with the reason. See Planner.
Shallow work
A task that does not need peak concentration. The planner keeps it out of your peak focus hours when it can. See task properties.
Smart reserve
Booking time for one task yourself, by picking a slot Empi suggests. The block is pinned: the planner never moves it. See reserving time.
Status
Where a task stands: Backlog, To do, Doing, In review, Blocked or Done. See task properties.
Time slot
A named kind of time (Work hours, Spare time, Off hours, or any you create) with weekly windows that say when that activity can happen. See working hours and focus hours.
Urgent reserve
Booking one urgent task into the earliest possible slot before its due date, pushing other movable blocks aside to make room. Empi shows you what it would move before it moves anything. See reserving time.
Window
One continuous range of time on one day inside a time slot, for example Monday 09:00 to 12:30 in Work hours. See working hours and focus hours.
